Plate Load

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a plate load test? Read More

The plate loading test (or plate bearing test) is an in-situ test used to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil and the expected settlement under any given load. The test consists of incrementally applying a known force to a steel plate and measuring the vertical deformation of the soil.

  • When do I need a plate load test? Read More

Plate load tests are used in any situation where the soils bearing capacity must be known. These are often required to assess ground suitability for temporary structures such as crane outriggers & piling pads.

  • How long does a test take? Read More

1 test typically takes about 15 minutes to complete however, this can vary slightly depending on the material being tested.

  • How long will it take to receive the test results? Read More

Live results can be issued verbally during testing and we guarantee to always have the final report sent to you within 24 hours of completing testing.

  • What do I need to supply? Read More

You will need to supply a reaction load heavy enough to cover the maximum pressure being applied. Usually, any tracked plant will be sufficient (excavator, dozer etc) although the bigger it is, the better. Please get in touch if you feel you need advice on whether your plant will be suitable and we’ll be happy to help.

If you don’t have any plant available on site, we can always source and supply this ourselves, again we are more than happy to discuss this via phone or email.

  • How far in advance do I need to book? Read More

We will always try our best to accommodate your needs, however, as with anything, you’re best to book as early as possible. Typically, we would require a couple of days between booking and being on site although we appreciate this is not always possible on your end, so even on short notice we will do what we can to fit you in.

  • Can you work out with standard hours? Read More

Yes, we can cover evenings, nights or weekends if this is required.

  • What areas do you cover? Read More

We cover all of mainland Scotland, however we are happy to discuss any projects further afield i.e. Scottish Islands or in England.

  • What plate sizes do you use? Read More

We carry calibrated plates of all standard diameters (300mm, 450mm & 600mm) which allows us to provide you with exactly what you require as well as allowing us to always work in accordance with BS1377-9.

Why choose us?
